DS4 - FASCU 234: WEEK 5

I lengthened the nose and snout areas per last week's notes. Some good progress, but a long way to go to achieve any kind of likeness here. Amazing how the photos are so revealing. Really should make it part of my process to take photos at several stages along the way.

I don't think flatness is my biggest problem -- I'm pretty good about rotating the stand a lot as I work to watch how the forms roll out of view. I do tend to under-estimate the angles involved in the brow and eyes though. Eyes simply elude me in this material. I tried to fool around with carving the eyes out a bit but the look is a bit severe, very "Constantine" looking.

It's very easy to work too long on one angle though. As some feature starts to look right from the front, the danger exists that a neglected angle -- like the top!! -- will be out of whack. I also find that stepping away from the piece for at least a day can be enlightening and quite humbling. Things look quite different when your eyes and brain haven't been trying to convince you how awesome things look for that last two hours...!
