DS6 - GDS MODELING 801: WEEK 10

Wings and Things

Learned a lot this week, if through some frustration and rework. Getting the wings onto the female figures is a top priority -- they're a key determinant for contact points onto the bowl. Did a ton of research on how to approach them; seems the best method is a mix of insert meshes and alphas. I created a few different feather meshes and built an insert mesh brush:

Then I created a rough dynamesh shape for the top and middle of the wings. Then on to the arduous task of adding all the individual feathers. The first version I did had two rows of alpha and 1 row of feather meshes and it just didn't look that great; this final one had just one alpha row and two insert mesh rows, which looks much better:

Still a ton of cleanup to do and I'm not totally happy with the silhouette and the alphas on the top piece, but I think the approach is sound and workable.

Just a heads-up that I leave for Italy tomorrow and will be ensconced in a board room all day for a week-long conference in Milan. Alas, it does NOT look like I'll even be able to see The Last Supper... Travesty! I'll be bringing my laptop and some files to work on, but I doubt I'll be able to have much to show for week 11.

INSTRUCTOR FEEDBACK

I was looking at the wing again and noticed the tip end feathers are not the right shape. I would adjust the 5 end ones to be more "Knife" shaped. look at the image attached.
