DS5 - GDS MODELING 801: WEEK 1

THESIS STATUS

Thesis Materials

The last year has been a blur and also a break for me from the computer in terms of course work; I've been focusing on traditional sculpture rather than working on my thesis or keeping my modeling/zbrush skills up. Tsk tsk. Pulling up these materials today has been more than a bit depressing -- the 'progress' I remembered making during my last DS class... well, not so much. Long way to go yet and I can see that this semester is going to be very, very challenging.

Much of my first Group DS class was focused on creating and polishing my base models that would be posed up and modified in zbrush for all the characters utilized in the main 'hero' pieces:

These were then detailed a bit in zbrush:

I also started creating some of the Achaean hard-surface details I plan to utilize in zbrush as curve brushes:

Then on to the onerous process of posing up Atlas and Hercules for the first 'hero' composition. This is as far as I got during my first Group DS concluding in Fall 2017 and the point that I will picking up from starting this week:

The plan for this weekend is to brush up on zbrush in general, dust off my models and update my aging machine with zbrush 2018. I've already discovered that 2018 versions of both 3D Studio Max and Maya are not compatible with my workstation. I suspect that it's the video card, but I'm not sure I want to dive down the rabbit hole of component replacements when the whole system is so old. Maya 2016 is still functioning, so I think I will stay there for the foreseeable future.

INSTRUCTOR FEEDBACK

Add a few more loops to keep the mesh more uniform. Will help when it's up in the millions of polygons.

The base mesh looks good. But, I think the arms are a bit long. Add an extra loop in the upper arm and the wrist.

The overall anatomy looks good. I think the neck is a bit thick. The corner of the pectoralis is too sharp. End the pec sooner under the shoulder. Define the shoulder along the back more clearly.

The detailed female model needs more work then the male. The head feels a bit small. We can talk more about this one as it develops further. Not necessarily more definition on the anatomy, just a little bit rounder on the forms.

Good start on the posing!
