DS3 - ANM 375: WEEK 7

Final Bust

Focused this week on trying to smooth the model out as much as possible. Also rebuilt the eyes yet again. While the black clay eyes definitely helped with eye readability, they just felt out of place relative to the model as a whole. So this new version is more 'sculptural' with modeled highlights instead. Overall I'm pretty happy with this rendition. Reshaped the turtleneck, filled out the bottom of the bust and worked on the ears to add detail and make sure they were proportional.

Good to get this first one done. Definitely ready to move on with all that I've learned, including being more careful about clay contamination. I have two black German Shepherds that shed constantly and the battle to pick out errant hairs was lost from the start. I might need a new, isolated work area moving forward.

Easter Sunday -- Last update for this deliverable.

Widened up his face per feedback; also made his ears more sharp / pointed per some of the reference. Added some hair detail to his back cheeks and did some final smoothing. Learned a lot, now time to move on!

First Assignment Recap:

Well, I learned a ton about how to work (and not work) with type of clay. Definitely keep your hands clean! My clay got dirty and discolored quickly from not being careful about cleanliness. Having two black german shepherds running around didn't help either -- I was constantly picking black dog hairs out of my clay!

I think doing the digital maquette first definitely helped me work out some shapes in advance, but in the end my final sculpture looks very different, and I think better, than the digital one. Bernard's a difficult character to capture given that he's from a 2D production.

The eyes were the biggest area of struggle for me, but I found that this medium was very forgiving in terms of trial and error. I experimented with a number of different approaches and and learned a lot from the effort.

INSTRUCTOR FEEDBACK

really nice job- very polished and finished!

Area in red feels a little/deep/over defined- but great piece!

Maybe just push the lower lid closer to the eye ball to close the gap some.
