Assignment 12.1: Brow & Eye Block-In
Rough week!
Discovered when I started animating that my blendshapes were totally malfunctioning. I had added blendshapes in groups (expressions, mouth, eyes, etc.) so I had multiple blendshape nodes in the stack. When turned his head and then started adjusting blendshapes, his entire head would morph into the blendshape position. A 100% value on any shape would entirely negate the joint translation! The multiple blendshape nodes apparently resulted in a "parallel blend" node that was causing trouble. The only solution: rebuild and reconnect all the blendshape nodes. I was able to transfer the previous skin weights more or less, so it wasn't a total disaster.

INSTRUCTOR FEEDBACK
Appreciate that you did a lot of work to sort out malfunctioning blendshapes. Very nicely done for a first take on this.
Would like to see more fluid head and eye movements. Fully confident that you'll improve and get the performances improved in the next assignment submission. Looking forward to see how Cpt. Picard comes to life.
Assignment 2.1 -- Acting Study
Describe the situation of the scene you chose to watch for Assignment 12.3. What does the actor do to convey his emotion? Describe in as much detail as possible and post a link to the clip you are talking about if it is available somewhere on the internet.
I chose a shot from Amelie, (Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain), 2001. I chose this shot because it has such an affecting range of very convincing emotional movement over such a short span of time.
Backstory:
Amelie has fallen in love with man who she’s never actually met in person. She’s shy and has asked a co-worker to speak to him on her behalf but she has come to believe that the co-worker has gotten together with him instead.
The scene:
Amelie has gone home and started making a cake in the kitchen.
0:12 -- Opens a packet of baking soda and discovers she’s short on this ingredient. She frowns, squeezes her brows and purses her lips in annoyance.
0:12 – 0:40 – She begins to imagine her beau venturing out in the rain to fetch the ingredient she needs. She starts to smile, seeing him interact with the grocer on the corner and then sneak back into the apartment behind her. His quiet, playful imminent approach makes her smile broadly.
0:40 – 1:00 -- She imagines him brushing the hanging bead chains in the doorway. The sound behind her is real and her breath quickens with heightening anticipation; her mouth opens slightly along with her eyes in surprise. She turns slowly to look back, finding that it is just her cat that has made the noise.
1:00 – 1:10 – Her face falls and transitions to agonized sorrow in the disappointment. Brows squeeze together and up and her mouth frowns in a pout.
1:10 – 1:20 – She looks wistfully up and to her right in a sad internal dialogue seeming to fully realize that her hopes and dreams of such a domesticated happy ending with this man are not to be.
1:20 – 1:23 – She wipes her tears and forces herself to get back to the task at hand.
1:23 – 1:25 – The doorbell rings! Surprise and hope dawn as she turns to the door, eyes wide and mouth slightly open.
