DS1 - GDS MODELING 801: WEEK 1
Thesis Project Materials
I passed my midpoint review successfully last March. Within a few weeks thereafter I started a new job (having been laid off the prior November) that has turned out to be very challenging. Here we are now in September and I have not even started on my final project, much less even really looked at it since MPR! Things haven't really settled down at work, but I am getting very motivated to move the project forward and get myself to the MFA finish line.
I spent some time today creating a revised presentation that updates the scope of the project and some of the deliverables. I also added in the committee's comments in the appendix.
My plan for this semester is to get through the major pre-production tasks and have very solid rough designs completed for all the pieces in my project. This will require building quad base meshes, doing a lot of massing and pose studies as well as constructing all of the supporting vessel shapes. I also need to nail down my rendering solution and look in new Zbrush 4R8 features that could affect my workflow.
Assignment for the week is to complete the following questionnaire:

Anticipated Semester of Final Review:
FALL 2020
Please answer the following questions. Be as detailed as you can.
Have you taken a GDS before? If so, with who?
No. This is my first one.
When did you pass your Midpoint Review?
March 2017
Was it a Conditional Approval? If so, what were the conditions? Who did you work with to address and resolve the conditions?
Not Conditional – Full Approval. The only significant feedback / change requested was to reduce the scope.
What is the current state of your character rig(s)? Are they usable now? If not, when will they be?
N/A I will not be rigging my characters for animation. Work has not yet started on model creation.
What is the current state of your environment(s)?
N/A My project has no environments.
What is the current state of your textures?
N/A No texture work planned.
What is the current state of your lighting?
Not started. Lighting and rendering style / software still TBD though KeyShot is top contender I will be looking into it this semester.
What is the current state of your sound (sound design, voice recording, etc.)?
N/A No sound design planned for this project.
How much, if any, animation have you completed on your project?
N/A No animation planned for this project.
Have you created a layout reel?
N/A Project is modeling-centric rather than animation-centric.
What are your specific goals for this semester?
These are the main goals I have for this semester:
Complete the male and female all-quad base models that will be used to create all the final figurative elements in the pieces.
Create the main structural shapes for all pieces and work through massing studies for figurative poses and relationships.
Per the committee’s recommendation I will also be working toward locking down my tools for the project by completing test renders in KeyShot and potentially also in Marmoset. Some time will need to be invested in render software training as well as investigating the new features in Zbrush 4R8 that could aid my particular production.
INSTRUCTOR FEEDBACK
Looking forward to seeing how these models are turning out. I remember your Midpoint review!
