SUNROOM SHELVING UNIT

Working on creating other areas to put books around the house now that the library is overflowing. John's long-time friend Lothar gave us a cache of gardening books and after having finished the oak office chair and antique typewriter table for the sunroom, a little bookshelf unit nearby seemed like a good addition.

I designed it in Maya around some oak stair treads we had left over in the garage (the radiused top and center shelf)

Bought some clamps for the project:

Sides, back and supports were made of 3/4" birch plywood stained true black. Cut the feet from some spare pine stock:

Got some more use out of the Kreg jointer jig. Assembly was a bit tricky in order to hide most of these drill points / screws:

The center oak shelf was designed to slide into routered slots on the sides:

The front edges of the birch plywood got a veneer treatment, then were stained black:

Attaching the feet was bit of trick, trying to preserve the slight overhang of the sides and accounting for the backpiece that would be attached last:

Final assembly from the back after all the pieces got 3 coats of polyurethane. All the Kreg joinery needed to be installed from the back so it would be hidden by the back piece attached last:

Final piece:

Back piece installed:

In situ:

And loaded with Gardening, Writing, and Management books!
