SALVAGE SERVICE PROJECT

My friend Laura picked up a 'diamond in the rough' that was in the trash bin at Goodwill (if Goodwill considers it trash, that definitely says something!) She was so excited about its potential though, I just had to make it work for her. Here's that "diamond":

In its former life this was part of some built-in shelves. It's white vinyl veneered particle board, and yes, this is all there is of it. Laura was excited about its vertical potential but standing it upright it was about as wobbly as house of cards. It would need additional structural supports, a bottom section, and a lot of clean up to be suitable as a set of shelves.

Cut a few new birch plywood pieces for the new base and bottom and gave them a few coats of white paint:

Applying a wood veneer stripping to cover all the rough particle board edges:

New bottom screwed on and all the edge veneering painted:

Structurally it was still pretty wobbly though. Additional supports needed to be created and attached to the corners:

Laura wanted to use this as a bookcase but the depth was really a bit much for convenience. I came up with the idea of mounting the entire unit on a turntable to allow the entire thing to rotate and books to accessed from both sides.

Bolting the lazy susan turntable hardware to a new base piece the whole unit would spin on:

Final bookcase with supports at corners and new base attached. I added little feet to bottom of the base for a more finished and classy look:

The happy customer, Laura:
