Finally got around to reworking the built in display shelves in the living room. The before, a mix of framed photos, treasure boxes, and miscellaneous memorabilia:

The bigger issue has been dust and dirt. Pulling everything off the shelves told the story:

I wanted to add plexiglass doors to the bottom 4 shelves, add some addition interior shelving to better display more stuff, and also install some LED lighting to help illuminate all the treasures.

PART 1 -- LIGHTING

Bought a cheap LED light strip kit from Amazon:

Drilled some small holes to allow feeding of the wiring up through and around the shelves:

Cut down the lighting into strips and used some solderless connectors and RGBG wiring to connect the segments:

Lighting installed, but all the wiring still needed to be tacked down and painted to conceal it from view:

PART 2 -- PLEXI SHELVES AND DOORS

Installed the plexiglass shelving. Even at 1/4" thick, the 36" length of the shelves turned out to be a bit much. Had to cut some support pieces to keep the shelves from sagging. Worked well! (All plexi still covered in protective paper):

Installed the doors. Searched a long time to find the right hinges. Finally found these glass door hinges on Amazon:

The front shelf facings had to be notched for each hinge, 2 per door. Took a while to dial in the right depth:

ree

All the doors hung, still with protective paper covering:

ree

Had to cut down the door knob hardware, then drill the doors for install:

ree

All the paper removed and testing out the colored lighting effects, Orange:

Purple:

All the artifacts restored and arranged!:

Still adding more treasures and moving things around but generally complete:
