GARAGE OVERHAUL - PART 1

The last bastion of clutter and debris: the garage. As the house renovation migrated from house to studio, the tools, materials, supplies and just junk in general moved to the garage, the final 'unfinished' area of the house still in its original move-in condition.

With a few weeks off over the Christmas holiday, time and opportunity had arrived to start tacking it! Starting point:

Center built-in workbench area:

First things first, the clutter needs a place to go. Answer: more shelves!

The left-side wall of the garage was not being well utilized with just this old weapons rack:

Cleaned out the area and started work on patching the wall and re-painting. Discovered some old termite damage and drywall crumbling towards the bottom left of the wall that needed addressing.

Detail of the critter goodness, serious YUCK:

Constructed these shelves the same as the ones further along the wall, just a sheet of birch plywood ripped down to shelf depth with a shallow strip tacked along the front to keep contents secure. Primed and painted:

And finally installed:

On to making more room to work...

Moved everything off of the center workbench and started looking for things to donate / craigslist. Got rid of a file cabinet, a set of metal utility shelves and a truckload of household items. Re-organized all the shelving contents:

The wall to the left of the new shelves presented an opportunity for hardware storage. A few months back the local Aaron Brothers store went out of business. I knew the manager and when the final clean-out days arrived she gave me dibs on anything remaining in the building. A wall-mounted hardware bin full of framing supplies was available and I grabbed it. It had all been sitting in the garage in boxes since, but now a final home:

Still some painting and touch-up to do here and there, but the left side of the garage is now complete and now there's room to work elsewhere.

Next up: The center built-in workbench!
